Tanzania to switch off all unregistered sim cards

The Tanzanian government is preparing to deactivate all sim cards that remain unregistered after a deadline to do so expires today.

However, with the deadline fast approaching, only around 20 million sims have been registered, leaving over half of the active cards inside the country at risk of deactivation.

Long queues have formed at centres across the country, as many rush to register.

The registration is intended to deal with cyber-crime and fraud, according to the government. However, some believe that the move will allow the government to eavesdrop on citizens.
