UN steps in to help amid worsening locust plague

As the locust swarm that has plagued northern Kenya grows and heads south, the UN has pledged $10 million to help fight it.

The financial aid will be used for aerial pesticide spraying to try to limit the spread of the swarm. Experts have warned that the plague has the potential to devastate East Africa and threaten food security in the region.

An estimate of $70 million is apparently needed to fully tackle the swarm, in an operation that could take more than six months, according to the UN.
